Segura Viudas Brut Reserva – A yummy Cava

May 17, 2011 | Drinks, Recipe

Having a few bottles of Segura around the house is a necessity.  It was a staple when I lived in Whistler, where we would saber a bottle off the deck and slip into the hot tub.  Bubbles in the bubbles…

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva is a great example of affordable sparkling wine.  Although it is méthode champenoise, they use different grape varietals and of course, not coming from the Champagne region of France, cannot be called champagne… but it often is.  So let’s call this sparkling as it is, a Cava.

Cava is the name of a type of Spanish (mostly in Catalonia but also in other regions such as Valencia, La Rioja, Extremadura) white or pink sparkling wine produced mainly in the Penedès region in Catalonia, 40 km to the southwest of Barcelona, with the méthode champenoise.

SEGURA VIUDAS BRUT RESERVA

From $16.99 (BC)

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva, created from a blend of reserve and non-vintage wines, is clean and delicate, yet rich in flavor. A cuvée of Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo grapes are grown in the renowned Alt Penedès region of Spain, the wine is vinified according to the méthode champenoise technique and is aged in the bottle for up to three years.

WINE MAKER’S NOTES

The prime feature of Brut Reserva Segura Viudas is its elegant and persistent mousse. The aromas are of white fruits, citrus and tropical fruits, and light floral notes. The palate is exquisite, complex, and full of flavor, with good acidity and notes of lime and pineapple. It is dry and long on the finish.

SOMMELIER’S RECOMMENDATION

An ideal Cava to start a meal, or a loyal companion to preserved seafood, (clams, winkles, anchovies), pasta dishes, or even a warm quail salad. It is perfectly at home with soft milk cheeses or a mild Brie.  It’s awesome with oysters.

I love this stuff, and for the price, I highly recommend giving this bubble a try.
